March 1-10 set as dates to reserve "slot" classes
New format will pay big dividends at APHA's upcoming 'Paint Vegas' show
FORT WORTH, Texas—Big payback “slot classes”—limited-entry events in
which contestants in advance to reserve their space—are only some of
the many exciting attractions planned at the American Paint Horse
Association’s (APHA’s) second major breed show, Paint Vegas. The
inaugural Paint Vegas will be held December 5-9, 2006, at the South
Coast Casino and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
Far more than a typical horse show, Paint Vegas promises five
fun-filled days of futurity and jackpot events, in addition to the slot
classes. All classes will pay money in lieu of awarding points, with
the slot classes paying out the largest sums.
As host of the annual World Championship Paint Horse Show, held each
year in Fort Worth, Texas, APHA looks forward to hosting another major
show in a different part of the country.
“APHA is excited about the opportunity to offer our members a second
major showing opportunity for their outstanding horses,” said APHA
Director of Shows Tina Anderson. “Slot classes are a new avenue for us,
and part of the overall ‘new’ experience that will be Paint Vegas.”
Slot classes have become a popular feature on the halter and pleasure
circuits. Owners purchase entries or “slots” well in advance of the
show, and name the horse and rider later. The majority of slot classes
are for maiden or novice horses. Most slot classes have limited entries
with substantial entry fees and 100 percent payback.
Entering a slot class is a gamble because the stakes are high and the
competition is unknown—making these classes a choice fit for the Paint
Vegas class lineup.
APHA’s slot classes will be on sale from March 1-10. Slot classes will
be limited to 30 entries. The names of the successful slot owners will
be published by APHA once they are selected, and horse-and-rider names
will be required as the show date approaches.
Entry fees for the Paint Vegas slot classes will range from $1,500 for
Yearling Longe Line to $2,500 for Maiden Yearling Stallions/Geldings,
Maiden Yearling Mares, 4-and-Under Novice Horse Western Pleasure and
4-and-Under Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle. Class payouts are
estimated at $45,000 to $75,000 if all slots fill.
In further developments, it was announced that solid
Paint-Bred/Breeding Stock horses will be allowed to show in the same,
non APHA-pointed classes with Regular Registry horses at the Paint
Vegas show, with the exception of the slot classes.

APHA’s mission

continues to follow the original mission established by its early
founders.
That mission is to:
• Collect, record and preserve the pedigrees of American Paint Horses
• Oversee matters related to breeding and exhibition of those horses
• Create and maintain innovative programs that both increase the value
of Paints and enrich members’ experiences with their horses
• Promote Paints and preserve their history.
